The Flanders House is in Portland, Oregon, a city that rests on traditional village sites of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River.

Portland today is a community of many diverse Native peoples who continue to live and work here, despite centuries of opposition from European settlers. The systemic policies of genocide, relocation, and assimilation that still impact many Indigenous/Native American families today, continue to be obscured by our education system and the main channels of public information. In order to heal trauma, we have to first acknowledge it. We have to see the pain that white supremacy culture attempts to collectively forget, and be accountable for our part of the work that needs to be done. To learn more and find ways to become a part of the healing, please visit the Native American Community Advisory Council or read more about the current state of indigenous families in Multnomah here.
